“No one has a right to tell me what to do with my body.”
And Uwem goes into another brain lock.
The first time I remember hearing that phrase was when I was listening to NPR about 4 or 8 years ago… (yep, during the presidential race of 2004… or was it 2000…) I remember listening to what sounded like a young man debating with what sounded like a young woman over the issue of life in the womb. The man was arguing that life began at conception. The woman argued that life did not begin at conception. In the sound clip neither mounted a convincing arguement. (But really, who can mount a convincing arguement in a 30 second sound byte?) But at the end of the clip, the woman said, “Whether I think its a person or not isn’t why I am pro-choice or not.” [now I am paraphrasing from memory... so this is just close not word for word]. To which the man replied, “Well why are you pro-choice?” To which the woman replied, “Because no one has a right to tell me what to do with my body.” To which the man appears to lapse into silence.
I would have gone silent too. Not because I was trumped by the arguement, but because I can’t switch fields that fast. I would stand there missing the opportunity to interject, because I can’t switch fields from one rational discussion to… well… nonsense.
Well, that is not quite it. Nonsense is too harsh, but it is the best I can do on short notice. The problem is two fold 1) I would still be fixated on finish the first issue, and 2) I would be overwhelmed by the obvious that I decide I am not sure what the conversation is about. So what are we really talking about? Do you know? I mean, it is so obviously NOT YOUR BODY YOU ARE PULLING APART! It isn’t an extra spleen or kidney or toe or femur! For cryin’ out loud, you don’t even share the same DNA! It’s not bacterial DNA, it is human DNA that doesn’t belong to you!
So I don’t understand how the statement “No one has a right to tell me what to do with my body” has any bearing on whether or not abortion on demand should be protected.
OK, all done. Go tell you friends. Glad I could help. Be good to each other.
